The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that advocates for research and education around suicide, based in New York City, with a public policy office based in Washington, D.C. The organization’s stated mission is to “save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.”
If you or someone you know is at risk, please contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing or texting 988, or visiting their website to chat with a crisis counselor. They are open 24/7/365.
AFSP’s website has several resources – the main landing page is https://afsp.org/
Healing Conversations is the program I mentioned where people who have lost a loved one to suicide can speak to a volunteer who has experienced a loss as well. The visit can be done virtually, over the phone, or in-person.
Information on Support Groups can be found here. You can sort by zip code to find one closest to you. AFSP doesn’t run any of these support groups (we do not offer any clinical care) but we do provide that info on our website for ease of access.
As I mentioned, AFSP is the largest private funder of suicide prevention research in the US and globally. More info about our research can be found here.
