I am a Psychologist living in Australia. I began supporting veterans and current serving in 2002. From this journey with this extraordinary Tribe emerged my book “Which Way Is Your Warrior Facing-An operational manual for current veterans transitioning into civilian life”. It encapsualates the learning, insights and language that emerged between myself and these men and women. My mission of service is to support a more veteran informed approach grounded in the territory of veterans. My goal is to contribute to a way of supporting transitioning veterans to not have to come home to die. My second goal is to inform allied health professionals with a language and tools that can impact positively on their work with this Tribe as well as form a relationship of trust.

Q Who are you and what do you do?

I was born in Southern Rhodesia (in what is now Zimbabwe) in 1953. After uneventful schooling in which I focused more on sports than on academics, I went to university in South Africa, where I spent several years training in education. In 1976 I returned to Rhodesia to comply with national service requirements and was involved in the Rhodesian Bush War where I operated in a 4 man stick as a fighting medic on the Mozambique border. On leaving the war in 1977, I spent several years living and working in South Africa before emigrating to Australia, where I lived for several years before settling in England for a brief period. After unsuccessfully attempting to mountain bike from Great Britain to Israel in 1984, I flew there instead and spent four years developing the British Council English Language Centre. While in Israel, I developed a passion for marathon running, which extended to ultra-marathon running after returning to South Africa to qualify as a clinical psychologist. I returned to Australia in 2000, where I have remained ever since. In 2002, given my military experience and psychological qualifications, I was accepted as a contractor with a veteran organisation. This has continued to the present day. In 2022 I published my book “Which Way Is Your Warrior Facing-An operational manual for current veterans transitioning into civilian life". The book draws on operational terms and protocols familiar to all veterans. It is a practical guide to help veterans to formulate an effective map and compass to meet the demands of transitioning. It is both a book and a journal to allow the reader to document their thoughts and experience. The book can also create a bridge and healing process though shared understandings between the veteran and their families as well as others around them.
